Our History
1912
As Marion began to flourish, Marion Academy was not large enough to hold all the students. In 1912, $50,000 was granted for the construction of an additional school. The school, Marion Graded School, opened in 1913.
1976
Marion Graded School Closed its doors in 1976. The building was then demolished in 1977 by collapsing it on itself. The remnants remain under the ground.
2015
Nine lives were taken at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina including Reverend Senator Clementa Pinckney and Marion County native Reverend Daniel Simmons, Sr.
2020
Construction of Amazing Grace Park, The Clementa Pinckney Memorial began in an empty field that was once home to Marion Graded School. The Park honors the lives of all 9 victims and strives to further Senator Pinckney's work.
2021
Amazing Grace Park Opens with Grand Opening Weekend Events on Reverend Senator Clementa Pinckney's Birthday.
Today
Amazing Grace Park hosts programs and events to continue the late Reverend Senator Clementa Pinckney's legacy.
